Miyata Kumpei

Miyata worked tirelessly throughout his residency to create an original jumping box, 18 tiers high. Each tier representing a country he had passed through on his overland journey from Japan to Sweden, to which he travelled to join a residency program, yet taking the long route as it were, arrived rather late. The pinnacle of this work was realized at the exhibition opening party in which he undertook to seemingly effortlessly launch himself across this mammoth object. Furthermore, having developed a highly imaginative world map created from odd materials with a group of children, he went on to take a running jump and leap across the world!

In this special artist in residency program 3331 entered into collaboration with a number of art centres and organizations across the Asia-Pacific to offer support for young artists and nurture professional development in the arts. 9 artists recommend by these arts organizations throughout Japan and the Asia-pacific came together at 3331 for 1 month, engaging in the local neighbourhood while producing new work. Through the many people and events they encountered, the discoveries and inspiration they were met with they developed their work, which was then finally presented in an exhibition in 3331's main gallery.
