Profile
Jeffrey de Bruin is a Rotterdam-based artist whose work bridges European and Japanese sensibilities. He paints contemporary cityscapes in gouache and mixed media, inspired by the rhythm of urban life and the calm of traditional aesthetics. His works explore colour, asymmetry, light and negative space -- hoping to make people smile, even if just for a moment.
Base of Activity: The Netherlands & Japan
Media Used: Gouache and mixed media
Selected CV:
1. Maritime Museum Rotterdam - "Maritieme Vrouwen" (2025-2026) - Large-scale wall illustration for the main exhibition exploring maritime history through dynamic female figures.
2. Studio Kura & Arts Itoya Artist Residencies (Japan, 2025) - Research-based residencies focused on Japanese aesthetics, ukiyo-e philosophy and modern cityscape painting.
3. Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp (KASKA DKO, 2023)
Project Plan
"Modern Views of Tokyo" continues my exploration of Japanese visual philosophy. Drawing from ukiyo-e traditions, I will depict Tokyoʼs rhythm through colour gradients, asymmetry and negative space. By merging traditional composition with modern urban scenes, I aim to create a bridge between Edoʼs floating world and todayʼs living city.
