Residence Project - Artist Statement
During his residency, August Vilella will try to elaborate a series of artworks through his peculiar method of surreal-intuitive painting. To reach this objective he cannot imagine a better scenario than Japan. He wishes that from every corner in Tokyo, every experience in its streets, as well as its particular atmosphere, his art will have the chance to flourish as high as its skyscrapers, hatching out in the form of paintings which won't reflect the material and physical image of the country, but instead the deep impression and impact on people's souls.
Medium: Oil painting
August Vilella, a Barcelona based artist, creates oil paintings using a surreal-intuitive method. Without using any previous sketches or ideas he tries to give shape to his past and future through the subconscious mind. As a figurative work of art, the result of this practice evokes a dreamlike aura and a magic, metaphoric, and even philosophical language, which invites the observing visitor to reflect. Nevertheless, the creative process turns out to be completely intuitively improvised and unintentional so that the message of each painting comes out only once the work of art is completed
