Profile
Matt Grant (b.1981) is an artist out of Melbourne, Australia. Creating for solely enjoyment and expression at first, Matt considers himself an "accidental artist". His playful, colorful (and sometimes "inappropriate") works are the result of applying a combination of marker, ink, aerosol and acrylic to paper. He is currently developing his abstract line drawings, incorporating a style learned from the streets and a love of typography and patterns.
Matt Grant loves doodling, food and bicycles.

Residence Plan
Capping off a one-month residency with 3331's Open Residence Program, Matt Grant has developed a series of abstract works in search of a balance between colour and space. While drawing from methodologies in Japanese craft, in particular Kamon (Japanese family crests), Matt has boldly infused influences of street art, graphic design and typography to develop his practice - an experimental mix of materials at hand, namely ink, marker, acrylic and aerosol.
Drawn to the flexibility in design elements across traditional patterns and symbols, Matt's research at 3331 has included visits to local Kamon artisan studio Kyo-Gen, as well as an exploration of kimono, furoshiki, noren and regional flags of Japan.
