Residence Project - Artist Statement

"I was overweight during childhood, so I question the relationship we have with food and our bodies. Japan is described as the country of slimness; its obesity rate is one of the lowest on earth. Meanwhile, eating habits have changed over some decades, pushed by fast food and the pace of modern life. The number of overweight men and, paradoxically, of anorexic women has increased. The pressure we face to stay fit is high. So, how are issues of obesity or eating disorders faced in Japan?"

Katherine Longly (Brussels, Belgium) graduated in communication, anthropology and photography. Her work has been exhibited in Belgium and abroad, being awarded various prizes. She is also a cultural intermediary in various contemporary art centers. At the base of her projects lie questions towards social phenomenon: How do campers manage the nearness to their peers? What urges a person to gulp down large amounts of food to the point of bodily harm? Her work seeks to understand such concepts with a gentle and often humorous nature.

This residency is held with the support of the Belgian Embassy in Japan and Wallonie-Bruxelles International.
