Residency Project
During her residency with AIR 3331, Simone Engelen will work on her project '27 Drafts,' for which she returned to the remote mountain village that served as a backdrop to an upsetting incident in her past. The project acts as a starting point for an open discussion/research about gender equality in Japan.
Profile
Simone Engelen (1988) is a visual artist from The Netherlands. She studied photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2012 and finished the Master Program in Photography at the AKV St. Joost Academy in Breda in 2016. Her work focuses on the position of women, incorporating a range of artistic strategies like photography, sound and installation. Love Hotel, her latest installation in which she uses the walls of a capsule hotel in Tokyo as a diary, shows an introspective, obsessive and at times destructive struggle on coping with a sexual trauma; transforming pain into power.
